MISSION STATEMENT
The Secure Green Future (SGF) project educates, activates and empowers Massachusetts residents to effectively address the converging threats of climate change, resource depletion, and economic meltdown. We work to guide communities toward an essential economic transformation that will make possible a sustainable and just post-carbon future. SGF seeks to break the shackles of what is “politically feasible” and inspire change that addresses the magnitude and urgency of the dangers we are facing. We are committed to the principle of democratic empowerment as the most appropriate means for securing the just and sustainable future that we all deserve, and that is within our reach.
BACKGROUND
Secure Green Future is a project of the Massachusetts Coalition for Healthy Communities.
In 2008, MCHC provided critical support to the Secure Green Future local ballot question, calling for dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and a jumpstart to local green economies and sustainable jobs. Jointly addressing economic and climate meltdown, we called for shifting state subsidies and incentives from fossil-fuel intensive projects to community-based green jobs in energy conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture. The ballot question won with a landslide 81.4% YES vote in the 11 legislative districts where it appeared, demolishing the myth that people are not ready for urgent, transformative action.
Before dissolving, the ballot committee decided to provide the SGF name, website, and campaign materials to MCHC, bringing it under 501c3 non-profit status.
Our follow-up campaign against coal power plants built upon our relationships with a diverse range of peace, economic justice and climate groups. We held concurrent rallies in Holyoke, Somerset and Salem, amplifying the struggles that each of these communities has been engaged in for years. This campaign resulted in an emerging common agenda of 100% renewable electricity in 10 years in Massachusetts, which we continue to build upon.
